Copy and teach
The four ways to type any symbol
Copying works everywhere, but it isn’t always fastest. These are the four routes into any character — pick the one that fits where you’re typing.
Copy it
The universal method. Tap a key above and paste. It works in every app on every device, needs no keyboard layout, and is the only practical route for rare characters and multi-character faces. The trade-off is that you need a source open every time.
Windows Alt codes
Hold Alt, type a number on the numeric keypad, release. Alt + 0176 gives °. Two things trip people up: it needs a real keypad, not the top-row numbers, and the leading zero matters — codes with a zero use one character table, codes without use an older one.
Mac Option keys
macOS has no universal code shortcut. Instead a fixed set of characters sits under the Option key — Option + 8 is •, Shift + Option + 8 is ° — and accents use dead keys. Anything outside that set needs the Character Viewer or Unicode Hex Input.
Hex and HTML
Every character has a Unicode code point. In Word, type the hex and press Alt + X: 00B0 becomes °. On the web, use the entity — ° renders the same character in any browser, whatever font or encoding the page uses.
