How to type them
Type math symbols on any device
Windows
Hold Alt and type the code on the numeric keypad with Num Lock on — for example Alt + 0176 gives the degree sign (°). For symbols without a short Alt code, type the Unicode hex then press Alt + X (e.g. 03C0 then Alt+X for π) in Word and most editors. No numpad on your laptop? Use the Alt+X method or just copy from the keyboard above.
Mac
Many math symbols have an Option shortcut: ⌥V = √, ⌥P = π, ⌥5 = ∞, ⌥, = ≤, ⌥. = ≥, ⌥X = ≈. For the rest, enable Unicode Hex Input and type Option + the hex, or open the Character Viewer with Ctrl + Cmd + Space.
Word & Google Docs
In Word, press Alt + = to open the equation editor and type names like \pi, \times, \div, \leq — they convert automatically. Or use Insert → Symbol. In Google Docs, use Insert → Special characters and search the name or draw the symbol, or open Insert → Equation.
Excel & Google Sheets
Paste the symbol directly into a cell, or use a formula like =CHAR(176) for the degree sign. For powers, format the digits as superscript or use the Unicode characters ² and ³ from the keyboard above.

Common questions
How do I type the pi symbol (π)?
On a Mac press Option + P. On Windows, type 03C0 then Alt + X in Word, or copy π from the keyboard above and paste it anywhere.
How do I type squared (²) or cubed (³)?
Use Alt + 0178 for ² and Alt + 0179 for ³ on Windows, or format the number as superscript. On Mac, copy them above. See our squared & cubed guide for every method.
Why won’t my Alt code work?
Alt codes only fire from the numeric keypad with Num Lock on — the top-row number keys won’t work. On laptops without a numpad, use the Word hex → Alt + X method instead. Full fixes are in Alt codes not working.
How do I insert math symbols in Word?

What’s the difference between × and the letter x?
They’re different characters: the multiplication sign × is U+00D7, while x is a normal letter. Use the proper × (above) so your math reads correctly and is searchable.
