Built to teach, not just to copy
Every symbol carries its method
Most symbol sites stop at the clipboard. Ours show the Windows Alt code, the Mac shortcut, the Unicode code point and the HTML entity next to every character — so the next time you need it, you won’t need us. Nothing you paste leaves your device
All five browser tools run entirely in your own browser. There is no server round-trip, no account, and no logging of what you search or paste — the Symbol Identifier in particular never transmits the text you give it. The WordPress plugin runs on your own site, on your own server.
The codes are derived, not copied
Code points, HTML entities and character names come straight from the official character data in the Unicode Standard rather than being transcribed by hand, which is where most symbol sites pick up their errors. Shortcuts are tested on real hardware — Windows 11, macOS, iOS, Android and ChromeOS — and when a method is unreliable, we say so instead of pretending. Read more about how we test.
When a symbol won’t show up
A symbol that copies fine can still render as an empty box, because the font on the receiving end has no glyph for it. That’s a font problem rather than a copying problem, and it has a straightforward fix. Likewise, if your Alt codes have stopped working altogether, the numeric keypad is usually the culprit.

Frequently asked questions
Are these tools really free?
Yes. All five browser tools and the WordPress plugin are free to use with no account, no sign-up, and no usage limit. The site is funded by display advertising and occasional affiliate links, never by charging for the tools.
Do the tools work on a phone?
Yes, every tool is built to work on mobile. Copying to the clipboard works on iOS and Android the same way it does on desktop. The one difference is that keyboard shortcuts such as Alt codes and Option combinations only apply to desktop computers, so on a phone the copy button is the method.
Does anything I paste get sent to a server?
No. The tools run entirely in your browser, so text you paste into the Symbol Identifier is never transmitted anywhere. Nothing is stored and nothing is logged.
I found a character but don’t know what it’s called. What now?
Paste it into the Symbol Identifier. It returns the official Unicode name, the code point, the HTML entity, and the method for typing it on each platform — which is usually enough to work out where the character came from in the first place.
Why does a symbol look fine here but break somewhere else?
Because the font at the other end has no glyph for that character, so it renders as an empty box, sometimes called tofu. The character itself copied correctly. Switching to a font with wider coverage, such as Segoe UI, Arial or Noto Sans, usually resolves it — there’s a full walkthrough in our guide to symbols showing as boxes.
Do I need the WordPress plugin if I already use the website?
Only if you publish on WordPress and insert symbols often. The plugin puts the picker inside the block editor so you never leave the page you’re writing, which saves a tab switch each time. For occasional use, the browser tools here do the same job.
