How Alt codes actually work

Windows: hold Alt and type the number on the numeric keypad (Num Lock on). The Alt + 0NNN form works for the common symbols; for anything else, type the hex then press Alt + X (works in Word and most editors).

No numpad (laptop)? Alt codes won’t fire from the top-row numbers — use the Word hex → Alt + X method, or just tap the symbol above to copy it.

Mac has no universal code shortcut: a fixed set of Option combos, otherwise enable Unicode Hex Input (Option + hex) or use the Character Viewer (Ctrl + Cmd + Space).
